■Effects of Carbon Monoxide (CO) on the Body CO is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless toxic gas that is produced when organic substances are incompletely burned. When inhaled, CO binds with hemoglobin in the blood, which carries oxygen, forming carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) and reducing the ability to transport oxygen. A lack of oxygen in the body can lead to shortness of breath and affect daily life, including the recovery and regeneration of bodily tissues. ■Nicotine Addiction Caused by Tobacco Cigarettes and heated tobacco products contain a substance called nicotine. When inhaled, nicotine triggers the release of dopamine (a substance that induces pleasure) in the brain, leading to feelings of pleasure.
